Out There Sculpture Garden
Out There Sculpture Garden is a unique boutique nursery in the Arts and Industry estate of Byron Bay, nsw. Set in the hub of the thriving working artist community, this oasis of green is a welcome miander for those that enjoy the colour and vibrancy of exotic tropical plants and hand made one off garden decorations. Bright and colourful mosaic pots and water features are made on the premise by well known local artist Sarah Lysaght, who has produced her variety of crafts over the last 30 years in this location. Many years in the fashion industry is reflected in the colours and textures of the garden design work that she now produces, with a university degree with Honours in contemporary Visual Arts making the variety of mediums to play with inexhaustible, creating a style of the work changing with every new challenge. Several other local artists display their wears in Out There Sculpture Garden, including Benny Saunders, Nicky Meon and Gerry O'Neil with a variety of ceramic, stone and handpainted objects.
Exotic tropical plants are a passion for this small nursery, with many different species of shade loving flowering plants from many countries. Orange medinillia from the Phillipines, kalenchoes from Madagascar, bromeliads from New Zealand as well as South America and many Brazillian flowering beauties are amongst the diverse range of unusual plants. Plants for water features and ponds are also a specialty and night flowering water lilies, many exotic elephant ears and louisiana iris will add a spectacular difference to any garden. Exotic tropical climbers are also a favourite and include tropical wisteria or lady slipper vine, climbing frangipani, winter flowering dombeya and dutchmans pipe. It is rare for a plant collector to leave without something they haven't seen before.
But probably one of the most spectacular and much loved plants in the nursery is the huge range of bromeliads of all different types. The giant full sun bromeliads of the alcantarea family are displayed with about 10 different varieties from young plants to fully grown spectacular specimens about 1.5 metres in diameter. Vriesea with their zebra leaves and vibrant striations of colour are complimented by the large range of the beautiful coloured leaves of neoregelia in their hot pinks,dark reds, spots and stripes Bromiliads to plant in trees including tillansias, and spectacular flowers of the guzmanias and achameas and many other unusual families of bromeliads are a knockout in any garden.
The working studio produces a vast range of mosaic pots in all sizes and shapes , colours and designs to add interest and dimension to the garden, and a great way to personalise a verandah or indoor setting. Mosaic work is an artform that lends itself a number of different looks - a bright Spainish influence, a retro décor or the subtly of marble and stone in a bush garden. Several of the larger pots can be hooked up as a water feature, and there is a large range of stunning mosaic water bowls that the birds just love.
Mosiac classes are just starting on the weekends for those that want to make it themselves.
